Boneheads Gear Gigs Musicians Random Rants Recording

Categories are cool

Since my switch from the dreaded blogger lame ass blogging software to WordPress I’m now able to take advantage of some new features here.

I’m now working on categorizing all the posts. I have 8 categories currently:

Boneheads: A category dedicated to stupid people and the things they do.
Gear: Recording gear, musicial instruments, computers or any gear I deal with.
Gigs: Stories about my gigs or other peoples gigs.
Random: A blanket category when nothing else works.
Rants: When shit pisses me off I use this category.
Recording: Recording studio war stories, recording techniques etc.
Uncategorized: Means I have yet to decide what category to put the post in.

Now some posts may have multiple categories. For example: A dumbass musician jumps on my stage and plays my drums. He’s drunk and he breaks my snare head and won’t get away from my kit. That post alone could be a combined boneheads, gear, gigs, musicians and rants. I can already see that the boneheads and musicians categories will be selected together many times.

I’m about 25% of the way through categorizing the old posts so be patient.

Do you Didjeridoo?

I did a today gig for a long time client and buddy named Marko Johnson. Marko is one unique cat. He’s a didjeridoo maker, player and teacher.

What is a didjeridoo? “The didgeridoo (or didjeridu) is a unique wind instrument of the Australian Aborigines of northern Australia. It is sometimes described as a natural wooden trumpet or “drone pipe”. Musicologists classify it as an aerophone” (google). It is said to be the world’s oldest wind instrument. It is hollowed out piece of wood and you blow into it like a tuba player would. There is a special technique the player uses called “circular breathing.” The player fills his mouth up with air and blows in the “didji” while breathing in air through his nose. By doing this he is able to blow constantly through his didji without a pause in the sound. Marko can play his didji literally for hours without a pause in the sound if he wants.

The main blowing creates a drone tone, and the player also can create some interesting overtones by changing his jaw and lips.

Marko’s house isn’t much of house at all. There’s no furniture that I could see. But there’s plenty of didjis and hand made musical instruments all over the place. Musicians apparently converge there all the time to jam.

Marko’s didjis that he makes and sells at www.rounddoor.com are all over his house. He makes some amazingly beautiful pieces of art that are also musical instruments.

Marko has also invented some very cool mini didjis. They are called didjboxes. Check them out on his site www.didjbox.com.

Latest happenings

Much has unfolded over the last few days.

Mainly I had a knock down drag out email bashing contest between me and a client. This client has been one of my best for over 10 years. All the sudden he says I’m a price gouger and accuses me of jacking up my rates because “I saw his house.” I guess this guy is so into himself and how much dough he makes he’s flipped his lid. I’ve never seen his house and I’ve actually given discounts to him for all my services.

So the big album project that was slated for later this month has been shit canned. More details to come, but I’m too tired to write about it now…and I’m just finishing watching “The good, the bad and the ugly.”
