Recording the symphony #1

Recording the symphony last night was awesome. I’ve done this gig a couple years in a row now. The hall is amazing and the gear is top of the line. Knowing the setup from last year made it a piece of cake. Don’t tell the client, but all I had to really bring was a blank CD! I brought my laptop system and recorded to that though.

These two snaps below are of the cool sound booth and gear the symphony uses. This was my office last night:

The pic above shows the console and the racks they use. In the racks are tons of patch bays which literally can connect anything in the building. Not only that building, but the convention center next door! The 4 small screens are remote control cameras so you can zoom in on all the pretty ladies!

In the pic above the big screen is a monitor showing the stage. (I should have taken my drink down from next to the monitor). The little monitor is for the lighting system. The console, well you should know what that is for.

Intersted? I have an interesting story to tell about this awesome new analog synth. But you are going to have to wait to hear it….

Recording the symphony tomorrow

Tomorrow night I record the symphony. May sound like a hard gig but it’s actually really easy. I get to hang in the killer sound booth with some awesome gear, and about 5 remote controllable video cameras. I’ll snap some pix and post a report following the gig.

Either I’m a bonehead or I’ve been ripped off

I’m packing my gear Thursday night for my gig. I’ve got a little Yamaha kit I keep in cases in my garage for gigs. My nice Gretsch kit doesn’t leave the house. So I get the whole kit packed but the snare drum. I can’t find the friggin’ thing anywhere.

I tore the place apart and racked my brain trying to figure out if I left it at the last show.

The snare is an 1962-63 Ludwig. 4.5″ tall with a chrome finish, but it’s really made out of solid brass. It’s worth a fortune and it is THE best sounding snare I’ve ever heard and the most dynamic, responsive and LOUD. I was the coolest drum I owned. I could have had the rest of the freaking kit stolen and I’d be happier.

Inside the soft case along with the snare were my Zildjian HH cymbals. These cymbals I’ve had for 30 years. Yes, you heard that….30 years. (I’ve been playing drums for 34 years or so).

I stopped by the last club I played at to see if by some miracle they had my case in the back room somewhere. Nope.

So either I’m a bonehead and left the damn case at a gig somewhere, or someone ripped it right out of my garage. Either way, I was very depressed at the gig Thursday. I even had fans coming up to me asking what was wrong.

What a bummer.
