I’ve managed to keep myself away from the rap scene lately. No rap recording projects. But my latest video gig with this rapper just reminds me how old and tired the whole baggy pants and hat on sideways thing is.

Memo to rappers

If you think you are cool because you say “nigga” and “motha fucka” you’re not.

If you think you’re cool because you say “biotch” and “bust a cap in yo ass” you’re not.

If you think you’re cool because you say “bust a nut in a biotch’s ass” you’re not. I’ve seen your “biotch” and I wouldn’t do her with someone else’s dick…

Watching a couple fight during the gig

Last night’s gig was a typical one. I bash the shit out of the drums while watching the people in the audience. I check out the strange people, the hot chicks, the drunk assholes…

Last night there was a guy and a girl having a fight. It was very funny. She was a bit drunk and not talking to the guy. He kept trying to talk to her and she was hitting him and pushing him away. This happened all freaking night. If I was the guy I would have just left the dumb drunk chick there and gone home…

Thanks for the bass amp

Our female bass player had some friends who loaned her a bass amp for this gig. The stupid thing wouldn’t even turn on…. Thanks for the favor.

Collecting from musicians

One of the things….nightmares….I’d tried to forget about dealing with bands was getting paid. That’s one thing I haven’t missed in my sound engineer retirement.

With the completion of the metal project I’ve had to relive the nightmare. This band has 3 guys and each of the 3 is chipping in his share, supposedly. Band guy #3 keeps “forgetting” to bring his check book or money for me. It sucks to have to collect at all, but having to collect from 3 different people is a pain in the ass.

Bands should have a “representative” who covers all of that and if some band member didn’t bring his checkbook the representitive covers his ass and not me…

UPDATE: Just to be clear I didn’t start this job until I got half the dough up front. I never start jobs like this until I have a deposit. That’s what working with musicians for 25 years will do to you.
